What is the DV LEAP?
The Domestic Violence Legal Empowerment & Appeals Project is a non-profit organization that allows (primarily) women to continue their fight against their abuser. Despite numerous legislative and policy reforms designed to protect victims of domestic violence, many women and children are denied legal protections in court. Every support could very well help pay for some of the court costs these women would otherwise not be able to afford.
DV LEAP was founded by Joan Meier, a longstanding attorney, activist, scholar, and clinical law professor at George Washington University (GWU) Law School. Ms. Meier has litigated numerous domestic violence cases, including impact and appellate litigation; has written significant legislation at the national and local levels; conducted numerous trainings around the country, and founded two pioneering, nationally recognized domestic violence clinical programs at GWU’s Law School, twice receiving Violence Against Women Act grants. She also received an award for her scholarship in this area from the National Equal Justice Library. She has substantial law firm experience and pro bono networks and is a leader in the domestic violence community.
DV LEAP collaborates regularly with the domestic violence community on litigation and law reform initiatives, and works closely with the George Washington University Law School and a network of participating law firms.

DV LEAP won the prestigious Washington Area Women’s Foundation’s (WAWF) 2009 Leadership awardee. Your vote could enable them to get an additional $5,000 beyond the already $10,000 the WAWF has already awarded. DV LEAP has been the lead organization that brings abuse cases to the Appellate level because, quite often, trial courts do not have the precedent laws that will allow them to rule against a domestic violence abuser. Bringing the cases to the next level has won precedent setting rulings that allow women to, for example, retain their children and have a stronger foothold on monetary claim damages against their violator.
